AGIL 25th Anniversary Gemmological Symposium
AGIL 2008 Gemmological Symposium Celebrates 25th Anniversary

To commemorate its 25-year Silver Jubilee Anniversary, the Asian Gemmological Institute and Laboratory (AGIL) will host a Gemmological Symposium on September 18, 2008, at Wanchai Convention & Exhibition Centre, Room 608,during the September Hong Kong Jewellery & Watch Fair. The symposium, covering the latest information on the testing of Fei Cui (Jadeite Jade), Corundum and Pearl by expert gemmologists from Asia, is intended for jewellers, gemmological enthusiasts as well as professional gemmologists.


The symposium will last for threehours from 2-5pm, and simultaneous Chinese and English translation will be provided.

Speakers for the Symposium include outstanding representatives from the China Geosciences University in Wuhan, China; the Gemmological Institute of Thailand; the China Inspection & Quarantine Bureau of Guangzhou; and the Gemmological Association of All Japan. It is hoped that this Symposium will bring Asian-based gemmological experts and laboratories closer together for further interaction and collaboration in future.


AGIL is the leading and oldest independent gemmological laboratory and institute in Hong Kong,and has so far trained over 5,000 students including 400 diamond and gemmology gemmologists.


Registered as an Allied Teaching Centre of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A), AGIL is authorized to teach FGA and DGA diploma courses in Hong Kong in both Chinese and English. AGIL students have gained numerous top awards over the years.In 1992, a graduate from the AGIL Diploma in Gemmology course was awarded the Tully Medal, the Gem-A’s highest award, which was presented together with the Anderson-Bank Prize.In 1997, another AGIL student earned the Bruton Medal, the Gem-A highest award on Gem Diamond Diploma.

AGIL specializes in Fei Cui (jadeite jade), diamond grading, coloured gemstonestesting, applicaton of advanced instruments includes: X-ray fluorescence analysis, Infrared spectrometry, Raman spectrometry, Cathodoluminescence and Electron Microscope testing.



Mr Mok Wai Kei Dominic, the Principal and Founder of AGIL and a respected Certified Gemmologist with 30 years?experience in the jewellery industry, is the first gemmologist to receive the HOKLAS Approved Signatory in Hong Kong. AGIL has also earned its ISO 17025 certification from the Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS) of the HKSAR Government.Mr Mokholds a Master of Science degree in geology, and is a Fellowand Diamond Member(FGA, DGA) of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) and a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Australia (FGAA). As part of this symposium, MrMok will present an update on Fei Cui (Jadeite Jade) testing.
